JSV adquiere un barco de “nuevageneración”
With an investment of 38 million euros, the vessel —designed with cutting-edge technology— will be the most modern container ship operating between the Canary Islands and much of the Mediterranean. In fact, the ship’s features allow it to sail anywhere in the world, as it complies with all environmental regulations, including those in specially protected areas with the strictest environmental standards.
“With the acquisition of this vessel, we take a giant step forward in our Move to green commitment to environmental responsibility. The new ship guarantees a significant reduction in emissions and compliance not only with current legislation but also with upcoming environmental regulations,” said Sonia Herzog, CEO of Grupo JSV.
This major acquisition was carried out through Arkona Allied Container GmbH & Co. as the representative of the ship’s owner, Jüngerhans Maritime Services.
This is a “Methanol ready” container vessel, meaning it is equipped to store and use methanol —a liquid fuel that reduces CO₂ emissions by between 40% and 70% and virtually eliminates sulfur oxide (SOx), nitrogen oxide (NOx), and particulate matter (PM) emissions. In addition, green methanol (produced from renewable energy or biomass) can achieve net-zero or even negative lifecycle emissions.
Moreover, the new JSV vessel is ready for electrical shore power connection during loading and unloading operations, anticipating the regulation that will require all ships to meet this standard by 2030.
Its advanced propellers and rudders enable more efficient navigation, allowing the vessel to significantly reduce emissions even when using conventional fuels. It also incorporates state-of-the-art software that, among other things, optimizes operations based on real-time weather information. Another example of the innovations applied to this vessel is a recently patented guide system that speeds up port operations.
Staying true to its philosophy of providing efficient service and maximizing container loads, the new vessel is specially designed to handle Pallet Wide High Cube and 45’ containers, offering greater width and height in all loading positions, both in the hold and on deck. The goal is to accommodate the wide variety of containers and special equipment that sets Grupo JSV apart in its mission to adapt to every type of cargo.
The new vessel has a nominal capacity of over 1,200 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), with almost 35% of the total capacity dedicated to 45’ Reefer (temperature-controlled) containers.
The purchase of this new-generation vessel marks one of the most significant milestones in Grupo JSV’s 31-year history, alongside the launch of its own terminals (the port terminal in Alicante and the rail terminal in Miranda de Ebro) and its entry into the Turkish market. Because of its importance to this family-owned company, the new vessel has been named “Mila Green,” in tribute to Milagros Sáenz de Samaniego (Mila), the wife of JSV’s founder, Antonio Herzog.
Since its inception, JSV has stood out for its innovation in tailor-made solutions and special containers, as well as for providing agile, efficient service with direct control at every stage of the supply chain using its own resources. It began operations in 1994 with maritime transport and the first patented containers in the Canary Islands, also investing in modern facilities for dry and temperature-controlled cargo logistics, both for full containers and palletized goods.
Later, as part of its multimodal strategy and sustainability plan, it invested over 7 million euros in the rail terminal and dry port in the north (Terminal de Contenedores de Miranda – TCM), to expand rail connections and reduce its carbon footprint. In the same line, in October 2023, it launched the Alicante Port HUB —its own terminal spanning more than 70,000 square meters— with an initial investment of 12 million euros, allowing the group to integrate its services and establish a key hub for efficient and sustainable multimodal connections.
Currently, JSV is the leading maritime service provider to the Canary Islands, offering both express and regular routes, and has also strengthened its business presence in Turkey with a service as fast as road transport and with the same capacity but lower emissions.
